Repetition is a powerful technique that is used in music to create memorable and beautiful melodies, songs and other pieces of music. Think of the songs that you listen to; I don’t think you will find a song that doesn’t have a repetition of a particular part/parts of the vocal melody or/and the instrumental melody. Even lyrics and rhythm get repeated in songs. You can repeat any aspect of a piece of music or a song.
Repetition helps us to remember the song or the piece of music that we’re listening to. Repetition is a powerful technique that makes songs, melodies and other pieces of music to be memorable. Just imagine if every line of your favourite song was different, don’t you think that it will make the song more difficult to remember? Don’t you think that it will make the song worse?
If you want a song’s melody or a song’s instrumental or the song itself that you want to create to stick in people’s heads (i.e. if you want it to be memorable) and sound good to them, remember to use repetition. Repetition is a powerful technique that helps to unify the whole of a song or a melody or a piece of music. Think of all the songs that you’ve ever listened to and you will see that you will rarely find any of them that doesn’t make use of the technique of repetition.
Even though repetition is good in music, too much repetition is also bad. It is important to strike a balance. You want your music to have different musical ideas; but you also don’t want it to have too many musical ideas. So, the key thing here is balance. Too much repetition will bore your listeners and it will make your song or melody or your piece of music to be too predictable. Too much repetition might even annoy your listeners. A healthy amount of different ideas and a healthy amount of repetition is what makes a song or a melody or a piece of music to sound good.
