Lesson 4 – Which Piano or Electronic Keyboard should you buy?

One question that people ask at times is “which Piano should I buy?”. In this article, I’m going to tell you the Piano that you should buy. You should buy a Piano that has 88 fully-weighted Keys. You have the option of buying an Acoustic Piano or a Digital Piano or an Electronic Keyboard. Alternatively, you could buy 2 or 3 of the aforementioned (i.e. an Acoustic Piano, a Digital Piano or an Electronic Keyboard).

.

An Electronic Keyboard usually has more instrumental sounds than a Digital Piano. An Electronic Keyboard usually has fewer keys than 88 keys. An Electronic Keyboard usually doesn’t have weighted keys. You would have to tune an Acoustic Piano from time to time (e.g. every 6 months) in order for it to stay in tune. A Digital Piano doesn’t need to be tuned; a Digital Piano will always stay in tune.

.

The best thing is to buy an Acoustic Piano, an Electronic Keyboard and a Digital Piano; however, I understand that most people cannot afford an Acoustic Piano. It is a good idea to buy both a Digital Piano and an Electronic Keyboard. However, if you had to choose between a Digital Piano and an Electronic Keyboard, go for the Digital Piano. Having said that, there are situations where an Electronic Keyboard will be more suited to your needs. For example, it might be better to buy an Electronic Keyboard for a child since the keys on an Electronic Keyboard are not weighted and since they (the keys) are also usually smaller than the keys on a Digital Piano or an Acoustic Piano. However, from a general point of view, if you had to choose between an Electronic Keyboard or a Digital Piano, it is better to choose a Digital Piano. The best Digital Piano to buy is the one that has 88 Fully-Weighted Keys. Even though there are several good Brands out there (you can search for these and look for their reviews online), I would personally recommend the Yamaha Brand for someone that wants to buy a new Piano.

The difference between a fully-weighted Piano and a Piano/Electronic Keyboard that doesn’t have weighted keys or a Piano/Electronic Keyboard that only has semi-weighted keys is the way the keys respond to physical touch. The keys of a fully-weighted Piano are more heavier to play than the keys of a non-weighted Piano or a semi-weighted Piano.

A Piano that has 88 fully-weighted keys will help you to express yourself more musically because you will have more control of how hard or soft you want to play a particular musical note or notes and hence this will also have an effect on the type of sound that is generated after a musical note or notes have been played.

An 88 keys fully-weighted Piano is better than an Electronic Keyboard that has a smaller number of Keys that are not weighted. This is because a Piano that has 88 weighted keys will give you more options and ways in which you can express yourself musically.

    • I don’t know much about Roland Pianos. But I like Yamaha Pianos. I will buy a Roland Piano at some point (probably this year) and I will be able to tell whether I like it or not.
